Services Provided to Pie Town and the Surrounding Communities in 2009
What the Job EntailsIn Pie Town, there are 19 volunteers in the Fire and EMS Departments, with most of these volunteers serving in both departments. These volunteers wear radios 24/7 to provide service not only to Pie Town, but to aid the surrounding communities. You have probably seen these radios clipped to the belts of your friends and neighbors wherever they go — to the Post Office, restaurants, stores, and yes, even the bathroom. The radios are left on all night, every night, because fires and medical problems can happen at any time. Of the 19 volunteers, most work full time jobs; many are self-employed business owners who work far more than a 40–hour work week. Ten volunteers are over the age of 50. Many are doing some form of care for aging parents or young children. These folks have a lot on their plates, yet they still answer the call when needed. Pie Town services extend to the surrounding areas, also. Of the 19 fire tones in 2009—2010, only four were in the Pie Town District. Of the 19 motor vehicle collisions, only 9 were in our district. Members of the Pie Town Volunteer Fire Department and Pie Town EMS are committed to responding wherever the need arises. Required training has included firefighting (structure and wildland), Hazmat, CEVO (driver training for both fie and ambulance), extrication, CPR and First Aid, a First Responder class, and a Bridge to Basic EMT course. To the above activities add meetings, truck maintenance, building maintenance, extensive administrative time, inspections, cleaning and laundry, and you can see why a little extra help would be appreciated. |
